Pippin Hill’s Wild Common Reserve 2017 is now available in the Tasting Room and on our online store! Merlot, the word thought to derive from the Old French term for blackbird, is the most versatile and widely used of all the red grapes we grow. This varietal is one of the first to ripen during the harvest season and one of the first we pick to keep in line with the traditional Bordeaux style. 2017 was one of the best years this decade for Virginia wine and our Merlot was no different. Wild Common Reserve 2017 was even awarded a Governor’s Cup Gold medal in 2020!
We utilized the benefits of the microclimate to our advantage and with this we ring in our 2017 reserve reds with our first ever vintage of the Wild Common Reserve. It features an intense nose of leather and dark cacao, with subtle hints of black peppercorn and rose petal. The palate gives way to brooding dark cherries and pomegranate, followed by tobacco and the black pepper we found on the nose. The well-integrated tannins and acid on the finish play like the conversation that you’re supposed to be having across the table.
