Turk Mountain Overlook

Turk Mountain Overlook, a fitting name for a hike that is often forgotten by Virginia hikers. This 2 mile round-trip hike is a hidden gem that deserves exploring. The beauty of this trail? A quick, yet challenging hike, with five star views.

Ideal for a two-hour outdoor adventure, you’ll start with a leisurely walk on the Appalachian Trail. After about a 1/2 mile, trek uphill to discover stellar views of large talus slopes and the valley. Climb onto the summit rocks to enjoy the cool breeze and crisp air. Bring along a small nosh for an afternoon treat, and bask in the sunshine. Oh, and don’t forget your camera – these are some excellent, frame-worthy shots you will not want to miss!

Getting there: From Charlottesville, take I-64 eighteen miles west to exit 99. Head North to the Rockfish Gap entrance to Skyline Drive. To get to the trailheads to Turk Mountain, you will drive about 10 miles to the North.

White Rock Falls

White Rock Falls is a moderate 4.9 mile loop just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Find your solitude on this versatile hike with cascading waterfalls and a wading pool. Continue your adventure, and discover the peak overlook with pristine views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Relax and soak in the sunshine before your venture back.

Getting there: From I-64 (or I-81), take the Blue Ridge Parkway to MP 18.5 mile, just past the Priest Trail Overlook, and park in the dirt lot on your right (north side of road).

Sugar Hollow

Sugar Hollow trail is a sweet escape into nature, combining swimming and hiking into a single afternoon adventure.  Enjoy a leisurely stroll on the sugar hollow trail and spend your Saturday skipping rocks, wading in the water and enjoying a picnic with your family. An ideal option for people of all ages –  there is something for everyone! This hike is no secret to Charlottesville locals, so plan ahead and get hiking early.
