The latest harvest in Pippin Hill’s Kitchen Garden, Little Leaf Pickling Cucumbers, have been soaking up the sun this summer! Horticulturalist Diane uses a tent-shaped trellis which not only saves space, but also supports healthy growth of the cucumbers.
In order to grow up the trellis, the plant must be trained by carefully wrapping the vines around the trellis. After the vines are trained to grow upward, the plant continues to climb up the trellis.
The trellis trains the cucumbers to grow vertically, producing fruit ripe for the picking. The shade created by the trellis allows the cucumbers to stay fresh and healthy in the hot weather. To avoid the development of a bitter taste, the cucumbers require frequent watering.
